Refinery Sour Water Analysis
Define online wet-chemistry measurement around the sour-water stream, sample hazards, concentration range and operating response.
Sour water is a sampling-system challenge
Refinery sour-water composition can vary with unit operation, feed and upset conditions. Temperature, pressure, dissolved gases and contaminants make representative and safe sample conditioning central to any analyser project.
PMA reviews the proposed measurement only after the process owner defines the stream, operating envelope, hazards and action expected from the result.
Define the process and safety boundaries
The application review should be led by the process owner and document:
- The sour-water source, unit operation and operating envelope.
- Pressure, temperature, dissolved gases and credible hazards.
- The target parameter, reporting form and concentration range.
- Materials compatibility, ventilation, drainage and sample disposal.
- The operating action expected from the analyser result.
- Engineering, verification and maintenance ownership.
No analyser selection should precede the site-specific hazardous-area and sample-system engineering assessment.

Start with process and safety boundaries
01
Characterise the stream
Document source unit, pressure, temperature, phases, expected chemistry and credible upset conditions.
02
Engineer conditioning
Bring the sample to the analyser safely without losing or changing the constituent of interest.
03
Define the response
Link trends or alarms to stripping, treatment, diversion, investigation or confirmation sampling.
Parameter-specific sour-water chemistry
Candidate measurements can include ammonia or ammonium and sulphide-related chemistry, subject to method, range, sample matrix and safe conditioning review.
Ammonia and Ammonium
Monitor ammonia or ammonium where sour-water treatment and stripper operation require a parameter-specific result.
Sulphide
Review sulphide measurement around the concentration range, sample hazards and conditioning requirements of the stream.
Phenol
Consider phenol measurement where refinery wastewater composition and treatment duties make it relevant to operations.
Chloride
Track chloride where refinery water chemistry, corrosion risk or process control requires an online result.
Application boundaries
No analyser selection should precede the hazardous-area, materials, ventilation, drainage and sample-disposal assessment. Site engineering requirements govern the installation.
Online measurement supports the operating decision. It does not replace statutory sampling, accredited laboratory work or application-specific verification.
Prepare a refinery application brief
Include the process hazard envelope as well as the chemistry.
- Source unit and proposed sample location.
- Target parameter, form, units and operating range.
- Pressure, temperature, gas content and phase behaviour.
- Hazardous-area and site engineering requirements.
- Known contaminants and process chemicals.
- Required response, outputs, verification and sample disposal.
Review the sour-water measurement safely with PMA
Share the stream source, operating envelope, hazards, target chemistry and required response. PMA can review the analytical method only alongside the process and site-engineering requirements.
