Online Colorimetric Analyser
Automate a method-specific colour-development reaction, optical measurement and concentration calculation beside the process.
What an online colorimetric analyser measures
Colorimetry measures the intensity of a colour produced when a target constituent reacts with selected reagents. For online use, the analyser must reproduce the sample volume, reagent addition, reaction time, optical measurement and calculation consistently.
The chemistry remains parameter-specific. Wavelength, reagents, reaction conditions, range and interferences must be selected for the sample rather than assumed from the instrument platform alone. Where a colour reaction is not the right fit, compare online titration and ion-selective electrode measurement, or review multi-stream and multi-parameter configurations.

Why automate colorimetric wet chemistry
Repeatable programmed sequence
Automated sampling, dosing and timing reduce variation between manual test cycles and provide results at a planned frequency. The method still requires reference checks, suitable standards and routine maintenance.
Application-specific flexibility
A configurable wet-chemistry platform can support different analytes and ranges where an appropriate colorimetric method is available. Sample conditioning and reagent management remain part of the complete system.
From sample to colorimetric result
Each configured method controls the same essential stages while applying parameter-specific chemistry.
Capture and prepare
A representative sample is presented to the measurement system under controlled flow, pressure and temperature conditions.
Add reagents
The analyser introduces the method reagents in the programmed order and volumes required for colour development.
Measure optical response
After the specified reaction time, the optical system measures the developed colour relative to the configured method.
Calculate and report
The response is converted into a concentration result, checked against configured diagnostics and transmitted through the selected outputs.
Parameters commonly measured by colorimetry
Method suitability depends on range and matrix; review the dedicated page for each target. For municipal wastewater duties, see the guide to iron monitoring at sewage treatment works.
What to define before selecting the method
The best specification describes the analytical duty, not just the enclosure.
- Analyte and chemical form to report.
- Expected range and required reporting limit.
- Sample matrix, colour, turbidity and suspended solids.
- Known chemical interferences and process additives.
- Required cycle time and number of sample streams.
- Reference method, standards and verification frequency.
Discuss a colorimetric application
Give PMA the parameter, range and sample matrix so the method and installation can be reviewed together.
