PMA engineers reviewing AccuSeries process measurements

INDUSTRIAL APPLICATION

Semiconductor Wastewater Analysis

Monitor selected wet-chemistry parameters across segregated drains, treatment stages and final effluent with a method configured for the real matrix.

Segregated streams need different answers

Semiconductor wastewater can change with process tools, cleaning sequences, batch releases and treatment stages. Combining streams too early can hide the source of a change and create a more difficult analytical matrix.

An application review maps the parameter, process source, expected range, interferences and required response at each proposed sample point.

Define each proposed measurement point

The application review should record:

  • The segregated stream, process source and treatment stage.
  • The target chemistry, reporting form and expected range.
  • Complexing agents, interferences, solids and colour changes.
  • Batch releases, response time and the action triggered by the result.
  • Sample materials, transport, cleaning and disposal requirements.
  • The laboratory comparison and maintenance responsibilities.

This keeps the measurement tied to a defined source and decision instead of averaging away a useful process signal.

Place measurement where it helps

01

Source stream

Detect a process release near the originating drain when the result can still guide diversion or investigation.

02

Treatment stage

Track removal performance and support reagent or pH-control review.

03

Final effluent

Provide frequent operational visibility alongside the site’s compliance sampling programme.

Candidate semiconductor wastewater parameters

Fluoride, ammonia, phosphate and selected metals may be relevant depending on the fab process and treatment scheme. Each requires a separate method and matrix review.

Fluoride

Review fluoride measurement for segregated drains and treatment stages according to range, matrix and process chemicals.

Ammonia

Monitor ammonia or ammonium where process releases and nitrogen treatment require more frequent information.

Phosphate

Track phosphate or phosphorus where process chemistry and treatment performance make it a relevant control parameter.

Copper

Monitor copper in selected process wastewater streams where metals treatment and discharge quality require closer control.

Application boundaries

Process chemicals and complexing agents may interfere with a method even when the target concentration is within range. Representative samples and interference testing are essential.

Online measurement supports the operating decision. It does not replace statutory sampling, accredited laboratory work or application-specific verification.

Map the process before specifying

Describe each candidate stream separately.

  • Process source and treatment stage.
  • Target parameter and chemical form.
  • Normal, batch-release and upset concentrations.
  • Acids, bases, complexants, oxidants and other additives.
  • Sample timing, availability, solids and temperature.
  • Required response, data outputs and verification method.
